SHARED GROWTH UGANDA AT A GLANCE

Shared Growth Uganda (SGU) is a local Ugandan non-profit, non-governmental, non-sectarian and non-religious community-based civil service organization, currently operating in Kitayunjwa Sub County of Kamuli District. Founded in January 2020, SGU exists primarily to combat poverty through grassroots cooperation in order to reduce the burden of social and economic self-sustenance, thus helping to create a world where people live and work together for mutual wellbeing and a shared concern for the environment that sustains them all. The organization is duly registered    (KIT/073/2024) with Kitayunjwa Sub County Local Government.

SGU believes in people working together regardless of colour, race, political opinion, religious denomination or sexual orientation, to make life better here and now on this earth that we share, and not in a hereafter we can neither see nor influence for good or worse. Guided purely by concrete empiricism, we see human beings as human beings, endowed with intelligence and reason and the capacity to distinguish between good and evil because of their reason. Our belief system consists solely of faith in the capacity of human beings to change their earthly destiny for the better through intelligent cooperative enterprise.

Because we realize that poverty is sustained and strengthened by its allies in the form of ignorance and disease, and that we cannot work for economic improvement if we are ignorant or unhealthy, the education and health of the underprivileged poor is a major concern for us. In other words, SGU seeks to combat poverty through a “root-causes approach” as well as the traditional “symptoms” routine: in addition to operating income generating activities, our work also includes carrying out public education on health, human rights and socio-economic transformation, as well as networking with other development organizations.

At Shared Growth Uganda we do all our work through three key focus areas, which, for ease of nomenclature, we call Programs:

  • The Human Rights and Social Inclusion Advocacy Program, which includes:
    1. the Access to Education Support Unit, and
    2. the Access to Health Support Unit,
  • The Livelihoods Support Program, which includes:
    1. the Livelihoods Skills Training Unit, and
    2. the Microfinance Unit
  • The Capacity Enhancement Program, which includes:
    1. the Volunteering Unit, and
    2. the partnership Building Unit.

All of SGU’s projects and activities, therefore, fall under one or other of the above Units.
